Willowdean (‘Dumplin’), the plus-size teenage daughter of a former beauty queen, signs up for her mom’s Miss Teen Bluebonnet pageant as a protest that escalates when other contestants follow her footsteps, revolutionizing the pageant and their small Texas town.
This film is not currently playing on MUBI but 30 other great films are. See what’s now showing
touching, funny and critical at the same time. The fact that girls are together making each other stronger or trying to accept themselves as they are it's already the difference of many teen movies in years of cinema that never didn't care about really dicuss how we raise girls in our world.
Part of a very positive and diverse new wave of coming of age films that pass nowhere near the critical darling status, but manage to do their jobs (which is to send specific positive messages to specific demographics) while having good production values and being just entertaining enough for the adults (who came for Aniston). Danielle Macdonald is probably about to breakout big in hollywood anytime soon.
Solid coming-of-age/learning-to-love-your-body story. Ticks lots of healthy boxes for showing a way forward for girls who don't fit into the "beauty queen" category, and for showing adults how to change their preconceptions as well. Very well edited/paced with excellent montages. Kudos to Jennifer Aniston for starring. Manages to have high production values on limited budget.
We all know how it ends and we all know how it goes, still these type of films are important to shed a bit of light into complex topics which in general don't interest mainstream society. I personally loved how "every body is a beach body". Made me smile.
