Pabst’s film Desire, takes place in Berlin in 1920. Irene, played by Brigitte Helm, portrays a married woman who frees herself from the boredom of married life by having several affairs. Nightclubs, cigarettes, liquor and drugs, seduction, lust and false appearances set the tone for the film.

Critics reviews

Increasingly as the film continued, I became ensnared in the grip of Helm’s performance. Early on, her facial muscles barely seem to tremble, so subtle is her manner. That early scene on the loveseat, where undercurrents of yearning swirl and fill the air as these two creatures gingerly eye one another across the room, is beyond description.

    From a simple and somewhat confused, indecisive, history of infidelity of a wife, Pabst with the use of an amazing mise-en-scène cut out the figures in the spaces, highlighting them or immersing them, following them in motion loneliness or leaving them in the expectation of a collective. A superior intelligence that surpasses and values the deficiencies of a dramaturgical writing.
