Lars Kraume’s The People vs. Fritz Bauer (Der Staat gegen Fritz Bauer) is a powerful and convincing reminder of the suspect politics of early postwar West Germany (and some of its allies, including the US). Although occasionally clunky in dialogue and staging – one wonders if it were initially intended primarily for German TV – it does an admirable job of a historically and politically complex story delivered in unusually moving terms.

It’s fine material for a procedural, but director and co-writer Lars Kraume badly muffs the film’s pacing such that long stretches of tedious character development leaves the investigation’s revelations rushed, and even nonsensical.
