10 - I'd like to buy whomever added this to the MUBI database a drink. One of the finest Westerns of all time in any form, modest in visual flair and shockingly well heeled in performance, (parnassian) purpose and narrative heft.
Carrying a torch from McCabe & Mrs. Miller, David Milch's complete vantage of the violently nascent American West sets sights on characters only of this time and place. Invincible character actors catapulting their talents from Milch's exquisitely dynamic prose. I love how, by the end, all native Deadwood enemies lay down animosities to trust in Al Swearengen's beautifully complicated guidance. SETH & ALMA FOREVER!
Tv has taken over as the auteur driven form of entertainment as movies have turned into global cash ins starring comic book heroes. This is the quintessential western on prestige tv era. Amazing in every way most of all it's themes of the down and dirty philosophy of the American way, warts and all. Capitalism !
A smartly written western with a great ensemble (a usual thing for HBO!). Excellent eye to details and rich dialgue. The colorful language is fun for a short while, but also overkill's the flow of the series sometimes. Some characters were also criminally underused and it deserved a better ending.
