There’s something patently offensive here: the lengthy prologue—i.e. half the film—establishes Donna as an adulteress, and thus her hard-fought battle to keep her child alive in the face of a monstrous, snapping devil dog… could be interpreted as just desserts… But there’s such a primal pull to the scenario, and such intensity to the filmmaking, that all of this essentially functions as a man vs. nature allegory in which both sides come across as sympathetic.
