Gennadiy calls himself “Pastor Crocodile”, and is known throughout Ukraine for rehabilitating drug-addicted kids. But he’s also a vigilante who uses force to carry out his moral vision. Gennadiy believes he has made Mariupol a better place, but now, the violence in Ukraine threatens everything.

Beginning with his rough formation of Pilgrim’s Republic in 2000 and ending with Russia’s military push into Ukraine in 2014, director Steve Hoover peels back multiple layers of Mokhnenko’s story with artistry and acuity, assisted by a heady and propulsive score from composer Atticus Ross (The Social Network, Gone Girl).

The film grows repetitive with Mr. Mokhnenko’s pep talks. It becomes more interesting when he ponders the “criticism” section on his Wikipedia page and, toward the end, when the film shifts its emphasis to consider the broader political context of Ukraine.

Almost Holy has the feel of following an embedded journalist on one of those raw, ground-level views of a problem you’d never considered before but now, by virtue of good reporting, feels urgent and alive.
