While it suffers at times from sluggish pacing, this is a hell of an exploitation film with an aching melancholy and anger that places it above other kitschy blaxploitations of its kind. Pam Grier kicks ass.
Jack Hill was one of the kings of quality exploitation movies, and COFFY is one of his crowning achievements, not only for him, but for Pam Grier as well. She points a shotgun at a pusherman's head, howls "This is the end of your rotten life, you motherfuckin' dope pusher!" and blows his head clean off. A genre-defining moment if there ever was one, as subtle as Pam's weapon of choice.
One of the hallmarks of blaxploitation cinema, Love Pam as always. The rapid, high pitched drumming that plays while she runs from the Mafioso hitmen is iconic and was revisited by Tarantino in the mall bathroom scene in Jackie Brown.
