Cléo de 5 à 7

Agnès Varda France, 1962

Duncan Gray's rating of the film Cléo from 5 to 7

A real-time story of a hypochondriac that's also a travelogue through Paris that's also a contrast of the pop and the political. Varda's synthesis of fiction and documentary is warm and disarming. Is there enough narrative meat for a feature? Maybe not, though 90 minutes of life doesn't give that either. But you feel the distance travelled, psychically and spatially, and its ending couldn't be more life-affirming.
