It may be a fantasy but it’s not one of male power or desire. Like a feature length version of the harem sequence in 8 1/2, Mastroianni and Fellini are both at the mercy of a group of fully functioning humans who were only supposed to fantasies. And like the best work of both men, City of Women is a beguiling drift through a truly stupendous feat of theatrical ingenuity.

Between one lady who turns out to be a hot-air balloon and another who’s only a marble Mommy bust, a lot of lively flesh cavorts—but Fellini cares little for satirizing second-wave feminism, teen drug culture, or the machismo of a guy named Dr. Superdick. His true quest is still for pleasure—discovered in moments like the thunder of a train, the sunlight in a field.

No other major auteur from the salad days of the art-film golden age seems as questionable and out-of-sync as Fellini, and City of Women (1980), his autumnal launch at feminism, may have been his bluntest instrument. Or can it be, in 2016, a tribal icon, the ultimate ironic camp-fest for dykes, womyn, Fourth Wavers, and misandrists everywhere? …Newly restored, the film awaits its opportunity at being co-opted by its enemy forces. After this, it’s unlikely to be remembered.
