Released three years after the demand for talking pictures had begun, City Girl was already something of a movie out of time. Watching it now, one cannot, and would not want to, imagine it any other way. Though even this version is believed to be rife with Murnau’s concessions to the studio… City Girl is a glorious piece of silent artistry, picking up elegantly where Sunrise, with its allegorical country versus city framework, left off.
