The best part of Brimstone and Treacle? Sting. His devilishly, cunning con-man carries the soul of the film. The worst? The musical score, mostly by him, that kills the mood with odd sounds even when the narrative is in abstracted dream mode. Otherwise, based on a stage-play or not, it's too stagy and dialogue heavy, with too little intensity, showing there IS a difference between stage and film in expectations.
