A very interesting experiment. I loved the style of what this film was trying to do, I'm just not quite sure I understood the plot completely as the dialogue is very stylized and spoken very fast. A great take on the noir genre. Gordon-Levitt is an absolute pleasure to watch. Overall I'd say I liked it a lot, just not loved it.
Director Rian Johnson asks us to take his film seriously, and it doesn’t quite work. The film needed to be more tongue in cheek, because there are moments where it’s very difficult to suspend one’s disbelief. The introduction to The Pin, though, is genius.
It's so much more than an interesting experiment. The film captures feelings of teen angst, dissolution and hopelessness in the face of unrequited love as accurately as it creates its neo-noir world. Joseph Gordon-Levitt's terrific performance exudes melancholy, cool and conviction. His cathartic nightmare journey through a world of confused, emotional people gives "Brick" emotional pith to match its style.
a really fascinating take on a familiar genre. the writing is really impressive, with the characters jumping off the screen and plot, engaging also. nora zehetner steals this film, with fine performances in addition. the direction is beautiful, and the visuals add another layer of poetry to this work. not a masterpiece like brothers bloom, but an excellent debut.
Meh, it was alright. Flashy with the subtlety of a sledgehammer - all of that I could excuse, but do we really need hyper-realistic noirspeak as well? And to top it all, there's self-aware high school dramatics going on ... not my cup of tea. Separately, these elements can work, but thrown together with no attention paid to flow or dynamics - it just doesn't work ... for me, at least.
Rian Johnson skirts a thin line between homage and parody with Brick, but always ends up on the right side of it. Endowing high school students with dialogue and behavior right out of The Maltese Falcon seemed a risky move, but it pays off with heightened suspense and subtle humor. Joseph Gordon-Levitt here first revealed the talent that would make him the go-to guy for quality teen films.
