Biography, Drama

Basquiat tells the story of the meteoric rise of youthful artist Jean-Michel Basquiat. Starting out as a street artist, living in Thompkins Square Park in a cardboard box, Jean-Michel is “discovered” by Andy Warhol’s art world and becomes a star. But success has a high price.

  • Z's rating of the film Basquiat

This is my favorite biopic of all time. Jeffery Wright is a revelation as Basquiat. How Wright carries himself, his slight stutter and his mannerisms all work to evoke a man trying to hide a wounded child inside. The movie is adroitly cast and the soundtrack is pitch perfect. Schnabel knows the 80's art scene and has the confidence to portray it honestly. Schnabel's deft cinematic touch works emotional wonders.

  • mpho3's rating of the film Basquiat

Quick, name a film starring Bowie, Oldman, Hopper, Parker Posey, Courtney Love, Wilem Dafoe, Christopher Walken, Benecio Del Toro, Paul Bartel, and Tatum O'Neal. And do not forget Jeffrey Wright! 2016 me'd have said no such thing tho I saw it on the big screen during its original run. At the time, I hadn't the foggiest idea who Basquiat was. 20 years later I do, but now my brain is all fog and faulty memory. 3.5

  • smndvdcl's rating of the film Basquiat

There would be no Banksy without Jean-Michel Basquiat. This is a worthy biopic in memory of the post-modern, primal street artist.

  • S. Singh's rating of the film Basquiat

Finally added it to here then! What a wonderful portrayal of a great artist and person. Visually beautiful and big ups, Jeffrey Wright.

  • Mr.Rager's rating of the film Basquiat

A few years back i heard for the first time this name Basquiat in some lyrics wrote by Macklemore. Now it happened again, only this time it was one of A$AP Rocky song and i was very intrigue by this name so i looked into it. Immediately i watched this movie hopin to learn somethin significant about this mysterious individual. The movie should have been more complex.Quite short. Good acting/soundtrack. 7.5/10

  • alcools's rating of the film Basquiat

Notes: The vapid ''art world'' is as ridiculous as the ''fashion world''. Those fuckers in the restaurant when he meets his ex-girlfriend. The last five minutes made me cry hysterically.

  • Isiah Donté Lee's rating of the film Basquiat

Enjoyed the film a great deal, mostly because I could relate and feel Basquiat's devastation. He was fighting to survive and expressed it in a truthful and unique form. Jeffery Wright transformed himself for the role and nails it. Excellent cast all around, as noted the score is good and fitting. Painful.

  • Thomas's rating of the film Basquiat

Terrible portrayal of a great artist. Wright plays JMB as he this sort of child like idiot savant. This was not the real Basquiat. Schnabel should not have been allowed to direct this film. He makes himself look wonderful. Again I have to stress the the appearance of Basquiat given here is not what he was like in real life. Watch the doc. The Radiant Child to get a better understanding of the real him.
