Ratings & Reviews

  1. Marco Bevilacqua's rating of the film Au hasard Balthazar

I think Bresson is much more an Italian director. He can make a film with an extremely sincere and rudimentary expression, he creates films without any sophistication and with a direct communication. This film is poetic in the way he present the characters and their difficult lives, all of the scenes of the donkey are in my opinion very well thought out and graphically extremely beautiful.

  2. Jean-Go's rating of the film Au hasard Balthazar

  3. Sin título.'s rating of the film Au hasard Balthazar

Trabajar, conformarse y morir.

  5. RoRoRoro's rating of the film Au hasard Balthazar

  6. Лиич's rating of the film Au hasard Balthazar

What to say about a movie in which everyone is an ass except the donkey, that also makes the most effort of acting and gives the most emotional performance.

  7. Paul's rating of the film Au hasard Balthazar

take away the authenticity from "The Story of the weeping camel" and you get this. The acting is pretty annoying and not authentic. I don't get why this is rated so damn well!

  8. violaziluolan's rating of the film Au hasard Balthazar

This movie make me really upset but I can't help watching it...

  9. Matt McManus's rating of the film Au hasard Balthazar

Beautiful film. Half expected the animals to start talking, but thankfully they didn't. Instead what you get is another amazing, heart wrenching Bresson film. Amazing cinematography; the last scene is breathtaking

  10. Lior1209's rating of the film Au hasard Balthazar

Some people say that Bresson's films are dull, emotionless exercises in wooden acting and depressing plotlines. These people are wrong. This, my friends, is true emotion. No histrionics, no theatricality, just pure, unadulterated life. Au Hasard Balthazar is a classic for a reason - it's absolutely stunning.

  11. Maciej Karbowski's rating of the film Au hasard Balthazar

Ok, my review was too long for 420 characters. It's in the comments, if you are interested.

  13. victor's rating of the film Au hasard Balthazar

  14. Tim Chandler's rating of the film Au hasard Balthazar

One of the true must-see films out there... moving, majestic, masterpiece. Ugh.

  15. Bekriah M's rating of the film Au hasard Balthazar

The donkey gaze has always puzzled me, being highly communicative. Balthazar's death among a random flock of sheep, with Schubert and the bells sound in the background, is outstandingly moving.

  16. Pedro Mallol's rating of the film Au hasard Balthazar

This must be the third or forth time I watch it. It gets me every time. Deceitfully simple, it contains profound observations about life, art and film, just like in Bresson's "Notes sur le cinématographe".

  17. El Mau's rating of the film Au hasard Balthazar

Me encantan las películas de Bresson, tan naturalistas y costumbristas...

  18. elif jazel's rating of the film Au hasard Balthazar

now I understand why Godard said this film is 'the world in an hour and a half'

  19. Fabio Osvaldo Carta's rating of the film Au hasard Balthazar

  20. raghumenonj's rating of the film Au hasard Balthazar

Like a blotting paper, Balthasar absorbs the sins and passions of its masters. Balthasar is a zone of neutrality, a sounding board. The pleasure and pain that we ascribe to it is purely abstract and completely human. As an animal, it is driven by instinct and momentary impulses. It is bereft of memory and ignorant of the future. Bresson masterfully renders a spectrum of human emotions into the body of a simple beast.

  21. Marinos Koutsomichalis's rating of the film Au hasard Balthazar

A tough, introspective, movie. Not necessarily my style, yet it's so coherent and spotless that I can only give it 5 stars.

  22. Robert Powell's rating of the film Au hasard Balthazar

(a minimum of) One animal was hurt during the making of this film.

  23. AugusteB's rating of the film Au hasard Balthazar

Mh. I am confused. Normally Bresson is my cup of tea but here I suddenly felt his intentions too simple too negative and therefore slightly annoying. Maybe I was in the wrong mood. Still a film which stayed with me.

  24. Dimpfelmoser66's rating of the film Au hasard Balthazar

Right, whoever is not crying at the end of this, can't have a heart. I'm not quite sure why this movie is that powerful, why it moves me as much. I really love Bresson's storytelling here. How the plot unfolds without much dialogue and how the acting and camera work is really unobtrusive and minimal. It also makes you kinda grateful, that you didn't have to live in the french countryside during the sixties.
