Critics reviews

The politics and class issues are local, the references are sketched with subtlety and sophistication. What makes the films Spielbergian is the way he folds the family story with its ethnic roots into the universal story of a boy coming of age in America. In part one, he grows into his captain’s hat. In part two, he exchanges it, when action leadership is needed, for a ten-gallon hat.

Although it’s winsomely drawn with the sepia varnish of Heaven’s Gateand littered with musical numbers that are way too good for the movie around them (duet “Somewhere Out There” is a legit classic), nostalgia might be the most legitimate reason to watch An American Tail. Of course, with The Croods 2 now officially in production, there’s a chance that nostalgia might be better than you remember.
