Amy Winehouse is one of the biggest music icons in British history: a pop star with soul, whose appeal crossed cultural boundaries. But while her music made her famous, her chaotic personal life stole headlines. This film reveals the extraordinary life behind the sensational media coverage.

Our take

A moving profile of the precocious talent and tragic death of singer-songwriter Amy Winehouse, this biographical documentary deflates the sensationalism that surrounded Winehouse throughout her short life—focusing instead on its subject’s artistry. Winner of the Academy Award for Best Documentary.

Asif Kapadia and Sean Baker are responsible for two of the past year’s most innovative movies, “Amy” and “Tangerine.” Mr. Kapadia’s “Amy” uses extensive amateur video footage culled from a range of sources to create a painfully candid account of the British singer Amy Winehouse’s rise and fall

Amy is surprisingly shattering — you know what happens — but as a tale told by edited existing footage when that is now entirely possible – you feel almost part of her story… Amy Winehouse has had a camera in her face since 16, so watching a decade of her life ascend and then smash to pieces puts us in the story that builds almost into a horror movie. You want to reach in and grab her out of there.

Amy is a biographical documentary of the singer Amy Winehouse, but it is also a horror film. Watching it is like watching a ghost, a confused, tortured ghost of a woman who has boundless talent in singing and none in living… This is one of the best documentary films this year, and in some parts it’s also one of the hardest to watch.

What are people saying?

  • Film Aficionerdo's rating of the film Amy

Even if the dark side of fame is a familiar one, this documentary did a great job of showcasing Amy's talents and sad inspirations. Nearly the entire story is told through archival footage without on screen interviews. This doc shames the audience for treating her fine art like pop culture, and it's emotionally effective. I wasn't a rabid fan before, but I have a better appreciation of her beautiful music and voice

  • John H. Nomedal's rating of the film Amy

I want to listen to her music after watching this film which follows Ms Winehouse path to stardom and subsequently leading to her tragedy. This doc shows how media, fame, ambitions, addictions and love can make you and break you. Amys story is well crafted and told with private and public footage, clips, photos and voiced interviews. RIP!

  • msmichel's rating of the film Amy

Intimate and fascinating documentary from Asif Kapadia that takes us on the journey of self destruction that was Amy Winehouse's life. Amy was an incredible talent not built for the scrutiny of fame who was unable to tame her demons especially with so many enablers around her. The drug addled husband, the self serving father and the many too willing to turn a blind eye were just as guilty for the endgame.

  • Rocco's rating of the film Amy

An exquisitely painful documentary. Though relying so heavily on less than pristine camcorder/video phone footage is a dubious prospect at best, I commend the filmmakers for finding surprising beauty in the materials they had at their disposal and shying away from interview footage. Amy is the star of this endeavor and we come to know her every smile, tear and scowl. Truly breathtaking.

  • Sophie Wilson Wardman's rating of the film Amy

as someone that follwed amy's career from the release of her first single, i was uncertain about this film but i had no need to be. it is a beautiful depiction of one of the brightest lights in british music, showcasing her talent for singing and songwriting and her funny, warm personality. it is also a harrowing story of drug abuse, media frenzy, abusive relationships and someone that never wanted to be famous. rip

  • chanandre's rating of the film Amy

Literally watching an angel falling. The life she had behind those big joyful and hopeful green eyes and the dead stare she brought along with her in her last gigs. It's beyond sad. She coulda been one of the all-time greats. That boyfriend of hers was her worst mistake. One could say she died out of love. She chose him over living clean; cause with him there was no clean living. R.I.P. Amy ;(

  • mpho3's rating of the film Amy

"If she had lived, I would have said 'slow down; you're too important. Life teaches you, really how to live it -- if you could live long enough." - Tony Bennett. A beautifully rendered portrait of a lost soul blessed with one of the most incredible voices to grace the public ear.
