There’s an evocative flourish to the direction—with graceful camera glides and an expressive use of mirrors and windows—that justifies the perhaps overly elaborate set design. Litvak also brilliantly uses Davis (here in Now, Voyager-esque schoolmarm mode) as an aesthetic element: with her severe hair, dowdy black dresses, and heavy-lidded doe eyes, she’s a gothic drawing come to life, making her status as an object of desire for Boyer’s married duke all the more fascinating and unexpected.
