Katsuhiro Ôtomo Japan, 1988

Duncan Gray's rating of the film Akira

A landmark of not just anime, but of sci-fi and cinema cool, with its fingerprints all over decades of movies and video games, from the cyber-punk style to the mysticism that doesn't make 100% sense. It starts with a rather adolescent view of sex/violence, which would be a problem if it didn't also take adolescent frustration as its subject. And its ending, of youthful renewal, is far from cheap or nihilistic.
