Why is Rachel McAdams in all these romantic time travel movies? She doesn't have much of a role here. It's mostly about the father-son relationship. The father's advice is not to go for money. The son just wants to use it for love. Blech.
Fun concept, but what an awful script. The first half of it is unbearable, while the second half picks it up a little, but still a major disaster of a film. A second star only for the always amazing Bill Nighy.
A wonderful script by Richard Curtis and fine performances all around overcome any of the romantic comedy type flourishes that creep into the narrative. In the end its a film about fatherhood and finding the magic and wonder in everyday life more so than the romance it was marketed as. Curtis does know how to pull the heartstrings but never in a maudlin or hokey way. Quite wonderful with a great turn by Nighy.
