Una mujer sin amor

Luis Buñuel Mexico, 1952

dionysus67's rating of the film A Woman Without Love

One of Buñuel's most conventional and low-key melodramas, it is finely acted including in embryoning form the theological/moral bite of later works. Bourgeois society is caught in self-destructive dualisms anchored here in property, career and status. Like the circulation of accumulated capital, evil corrodes the soul and via passions it demolishes bonds, kin and intimacy in love's repression by societal norms.
