Synopsis

A history professor and her daughter take a bucolic cruise through the Mediterranean, acquiring first-hand-knowledge of and introducing her young girl to historical sites along their journey. During the voyage, they meet passengers of many nationalities and discuss the past and legacies of the West.

Dismissed by some reviews on release for the perceived conservatism of its literally explosive ending, today the film enjoys the opposite reputation, a sober, judging look at the effects of the 20th century by a man who lived through nearly all of it.

A Talking Picture is one of the most powerful examples of the director’s irony: set in the present and depicting a tour of ancient civilizations around the Mediterranean, the film suggests how the ancient world might regard us. The characters seem trivial, at times even silly (the film features what is surely John Malkovich’s funniest screen performance), yet they attain a poignant dignity by placing themselves before images of the eternal.
