Scofield develops his own brilliant style of magisterial cool; he’s magnetic even when More is trying to dodge the actual issues. Wolf Hall zealots will find Leo McKern’s Thomas Cromwell infuriatingly villanous, and as Henry, Robert Shaw is magnificent.

Even the most captious critics have a hankering to come in from the cold, and it is generally much easier and more ’Tiuman" not to resist the rape of the click film, the hit play, the runaway best seller, the bandwagon bonanza, the “of course” complacency of the success story. Even in moments of maximum hysteria, however, there is a place for the long view, and in this corner at least, there is grave doubt that A Man for All Seasons is a film for all time.
