Another Chabrol cold heroin after Isabelle -icy- Huppert and Stéphane -frozen- Audran in this satire of the French bourgeoisie, another Chabrol if not the sole Chabrol cinematographical theme. Benoît Magimel is great here. Highly recommended.
Such a great performance by Sagnier--you can watch her as closely as is
humanly possible yet never once see her flinch in being (not acting) her
character---all while this prototypically Chabrolean stew of sin presented and
consequences rendered bubbles to a climactic, deafening boil. Berleand
so oily, Magimel subtly unhinged, everyone around them deeply flawed... Chabrol, Moliere: nonpareil observer-moralists...
This is a movie about a young woman who can't decide between two men. Both are ultimately bad options. The young woman is silly, unsymphatic and you don't know much about her. The men are also unlikable, uninteresting and without any charisma. The plot sounds interesting, but it's not. Extremely boring. A waste.
Despite an interesting start, I find this film to be weak, perhaps Chabrol's weakest. The character development is poor and it is impossible to buy into certain situations. The denouement just about ruins the film for me. 2/5
One of Chabrol’s best. Erotic tension, emotional exploitation and narcissistic psychopathology in a setting of haute bourgeois decadence. A brilliant re-imagining of the tragic events that led to the first tabloid driven “trial of the century” after the jealous murder of renowned architect Stanford White by the husband of his mistress Evelyn Nesbit.
Both love affairs of Ludivine Sagnier were a bit unmotivated and unrealistic, but the film as a whole was quite engrossing. Ludivine Sagnier is of course fantastic, and Benoit Magimel is also very good. Chabrol keeps the audience guessing and refuses to opt for easy answers.
