I'm surprised by the mixed reception of this one. It gives us the story of one of the co-founders of National Lampoon and tells it just about as irreverently as he himself would've, yet while also staying true to its natural course. Directed by David Wain, the film is often funny and filled with inventive comic energy and is likely the most mature film he's made yet (while still being utterly anarchic). [cont.]
Wain and Forte are a match made in heaven and they have a great cast to back'em up, but this feels like a condensed version of a very good tv series where the drama, cameos and historical details would get an equal share with the maniacal humor. It almost doesn't work at all, but the story is so interesting and Wain does such a good job at making you feel comfortable with its storytelling that it succeeds. Kinda.
I truly believe that David Wain is one of our finest comedy minds and most important comedy directors. He brings a maniacal sense of play together w/ a generosity of spirit. He is clearly driven by an imperative to bring good into the world. GESTURE is explicitly about the troubled bringing of good into the world. It is hampered somewhat by a counterintuitive conceit and perhaps too generous a helping of cliché.
Netflix output is currently suffering from the law of diminishing returns. Quantity does not equal quality. Comedy is tricky beast - it either hits the sweet spot in the most sublime fashion or is an over-egging dud. Go figure...
Given the status of some of the people being portrayed there was no way in hell this was gonna please everyone but I dug it for what it was: an interesting and self-aware bit of off-kilter storytelling that shows us Doug's meteoric rise and spectacular flame out without overdoing it on the tear-jerking. There was a lot of heart hiding under all them one-liners.

Not bad at all. Especially the beginning when gleeson and forte first start hanging out and the movie somehow perfectly capture the comedic duo dynamic of late 70s early 80s comedies ala animal house and bachelor party and so on. The hook was cool with an olde Kenny from the dead who should have survived and been wildly successful. The camels are really good especially mcHale who absolutely embodies a young Chevy
