Being that I am a sucker for the conflation of humans and animals this pretty much hit the sweet spot for me. Much love to little Scraps, may he have a long and illustrious career. For a seminal early work it is not difficult to see why Chaplin succeeded, truly a democratic figure and talented performer.
A great Chaplin short, and undeniably the inspiration for his later The Kid as it mines similar emotional territories. I think this short is up there with The Rink and The Immigrant as my personal favs of his work, although this one maybe not as innovative as some of his others. Just a solid Chaplin effort with his trademark mix of comedy/pathos. 4.5 stars
Chaplin's first short for First National Pictures was one of his most iconic portrayals of the little tramp. Nearing the century mark this playful short is still often hilarious and touching with several wonderful set pieces including the 'puppet' sequence with two petty thieves. Wonderful.
