how in holy well is this film oh so underrated? i would put there on the same tier/shelf as 'Silence of the Lambs' and 'Seven'. That film within the film is so Bergman/Jodorowski it hurts. It is both Shumacher chef d'oeuvre and Kevin Walker's icest script. fan. the good deaths and bad deaths are on the same level. the monstrous reply? "There is no explanation. I did it cause i could. Cause I can. Cause i want to. "
Every decision Schumacher makes is wrong. His gritty underworld is generically stylised to within an inch of its life, feeling false rather than threatening. The backdrop of sexual violence, which the narrative seeks to condemn, is lurid & titillating. The efforts to redeem the protagonist only contradict the film's morality & push towards melodrama. The set-up is hugely enticing, but everything else is wrongheaded.

It works somewhat despite Nicolas Cage and the idea that Catherine Keener would ever marry him. I also love the late-'90s (mixing Claire's and Hot Topic) styling of Joaquin Phoenix as the guy with deep connections in the sexual underworld.
A potentially good thriller about snuff is ruined by a central weak performance by Nicolas Cage who overact enormously especially when he sees the film and can't sell the fact that what he sees is a "fake snuff" film. Even worse is that the film look like a glossy stage play of what should have been an intense gritty film and the climax is a laughable "Death Wish" wannabe. A huge missed opportunity.
I remember watching this movie feels like being stuck in an elevator with the most boring a**hole (boring varies with temperature and temperament) in the world...wallows morally in the muck/mire it pretends to explore and condemn...can Joel Schumacher not make a good film?
