8 Women

8 femmes

Directed by François Ozon
France, Italy, 2002
Comedy, Crime, Musical

Eight women at a country estate suspect each of foul play after the house’s owner, Marcel, is found murdered. The telephone line has been cut, the car won’t start and a heavy snowfall keeps the women confined to the grounds.

Our take

Murder, French-style! François Ozon, a master of dark character studies like Swimming Pool, lightened up for this acclaimed musical comedy-mystery that’s every bit as delicious as it sounds. The cast—wall-to-wall French royalty—includes Catherine Deneuve, Isabelle Huppert, and Fanny Ardant!

Critics reviews

Hyper-self-aware and ironic to a fault, the film comes down to earth and grows painfully earnest whenever someone sings; the effect is like alternating spoonfuls of sugar and arsenic. As you might have noticed, this also happens to feature one of the most incredible casts ever assembled for any movie.
