God's Country

Louis Malle captures raw Americana.
Taking turns from documentary to allegory.
Testimony to confession. Both stubborn & inviting.
There are so many honest eyes.

Q&K, i’m not sure if …AtPoH is ‘better’ persay.
If anything they’re equal, sans favoritism.
Maybe i just dislike the word ‘better’.

Uhhh. Thumbs down. The Maysles brothers are getting me into documentaries again. Absolutely wild and pure.

So, thumbs down to God’s Country followed by Maysles praise? Completely vague praise at that? You guys are confusing sometimes.

I just finished this. I thought the last quarter was particularly interesting. I was disappointed there were no credits, though. Was the person who moved to Florida (Gene, I think) the woman who talked about putting her baby up for adoption and how the men are macho? I wanted to see her again. She was cool. I would have dated her if I had been alive when she was filmed. It’s interesting that Farm Aid started in 1985. Those must have been really hard times to be a farmer. I wonder when and how things improved, if they did. Perhaps it really was just a matter of other farmers calling it quits? I know the industry isn’t what it used to be and it’s mostly corporate to boot. I guess I’m lucky I don’t have a passion for helping crops grow because I bet it’s a next to impossible way to earn a living these days.

I just discovered today that Louis Malle was married to Candice Bergen from 1980 until his death. He died while Murphy Brown was still on the air. For some reason I really wish I knew who Louis Malle was back then. The guy was nowhere near my radar, but then the only place I could have even found a Louis Malle movie to rent was well over two hours away by car. That must have been hard, being a huge TV star and your husband dying. I don’t remember anything about that and I like to think I followed entertainment news pretty well, even if I was only 13 or so at the time. I’m rambling.

God’s Country = Uhhh. Thumbs up. Louis Malle is getting me into documentaries again.

@ Shotzi. Lol. We were making fun of the random thumbs downs we get for the dumbest reasons on this site.

The thumbs are a perpetual mystery to me. There seem to be a lot of random thumbs up, rewards, it seems, for the initiated and the annointed. And just as many inane thumbs down for, as Michael rightly notes, “the dumbest reasons.” In a “comedy” thread, I even got booed for Some Like it Hot and Bringing Up Baby. (Next time, I’ll mention Adam Sandler and the Farrelly Brothers instead, then watch my stock rise!) Or I pick Raging Bull as the best film of the 80s and get three quick thumbs down, while someone makes the same choice downthread and gets two thumbs up. Puzzling, to say the least.

While I’m here, though, major kudos to Malle and to the amazing Maysles. I just watched Salesman and Grey Gardens again, and was (in spite of repeated viewings of each) transfixed.

Yes the Maysles are awesome. I also saw some videos on Dali and Capote they did and they were awesome. Gimme Shelter was amazing.

I think I’m most struck that no one seems bothered by the presence of The Maysles, hardly unobstrusive with their less-than-portable camera and tape recorder. Yet there’s such naturalness and, in the case of some of their subjects, so many natural “actors” on display.

You were very convincing, Mao! You can’t blame me for missing it; posts expressing a sense of humor seem fairly few and far between around here.

Some of these posts are totally non sequitur. It’s good to have a sense of humor but, it’s much better if it has something to do with the subject at hand.
