Repulsion is a brilliant film.
I shall have none of this blasphemy!
Ah, don’t worry, there are plenty of films left. Have you noticed that there isn’t any Chabrol in the Collection yet? Besides, they’ve barely begun to scrap the surface of Polanski and Godard. I want to know where Chinatown and Weekend are. But still, I can’t wait for this one to come out.:)
I for one am just glad to have a better transfer. The existing DVD looked terrible (though I suppose it did sort of add to the overwhelming horror of the whole experience, but no matter).
Repulsion has been a film I have wanted to see for a very long time. I am now removing it from my queue though to wait for the better DVD. I’m thrilled it is getting a Criterion release.
It’s good. Seriously.
i don’t get it. repulsion is awesome. the special features aren’t enough to make me upgrade from my current copy though.
this is a great film….and more Godard. this summer sounds good, hope more Luis Bunuel in the works
Unfortunately I just bought a cheaper version of Repulsion, not knowing a Criterion release was forthcoming. But still a great film no matter how you slice it.
Repulsion is coming to Criterion?
I have been frustrated having only a truly crappy print of this film available. Long overdue in a quality print.
Catherine Deneuve as a repressed psycho slasher … how can you lose.
I’m always happy when Polanski gets another addition to CC. Repulsion was mandatory as any true Polanski fan knows this is one of his pivotal films. Wonderful news that CC has cleaned this up! The existing transfers of this film are pure garbage really. I actually prefer watching my old VHS copy of this movie rather than the DVD I have…I’ll be happy to toss that out and replace it with the CC quality!
(and I’m still waiting for Weekend by Godard…ahem!)
I’ve always wanted to see Repulsion….
Mmmmm, Catherine Deneuve….. with Roman Polanski…. personally, I don’t care if it sucks (which I already know it won’t), it’ll be some damn creepy sexy.

Well, I haven’t seen much of Polanski, but I am always excited when they release new Criterions. And, yes, Weekend by Godard is necessary, and putting Vivre sa Vie on Criterion wouldn’t be such a bad idea, either…
Savvy
They may as well put every movie Godard ever made up, and get it over with.
A master stroke is in the eye of the beholder. I have seen this movie several times and it never fails to send a shiver up my spine while keeping me in awe of the incredible cinematography and art direction. In my opinion this movie ranks as one of the top five psychological thrillers ever made. The systematic mental breakdown of Catherine Deneuve’s character is fascinating and horrifying. Expertly conceived, written, directed and acted it is early Polanski at his creepiest and finest. So, quite frankly I don’t understand the head scratching and musing as to why Criterion would release this. I always asked myself “why wouldn’t they?” I used to have the VHS that Columbia put out several years ago and it was made from an excellent print. Loaned that to someone and never saw it again. The previous DVD versions of this movie were horrendous in picture and sound quality, so I am very excited that Criterion is releasing Repulsion on Blu Ray in a lovingly restored version, as they always do. Here, here Criterion!
Janus released a new print of “Vivre Sa Vie” earlier this year along with “Made in USA”. So I wasn’t suprised when I found out “Made in USA” was coming but “2 or 3 Things I know about her” was definitely a suprise and still makes me wonder when “Vivre sa Vie” will come out…because I would think that Criterion would try to spread out there Godard releases instead of putting out 3 in one year….unless they want to make 2009 the BEST YEAR EVER for their releases.
But can’t wait to check out “Repulsion” and I still need to see “Knife in the Water”
I think they may want to do a double-disc deluxe set for Vivre Sa Vie, and so they may be tracking down and restoring archival materials, also clearing permission, etc. They will be doing it eventually. I held on to my Fox Lorber dvd, and I’m glad I did (it can be gotten fairly cheaply again, though used copies were selling for as much as $150 at one point not too long ago), but I’ll be upgrading to the Criterion when it comes out.
I’ve always wanted to see Repulsion. I was disappointed by Knife in the Water, although some of the bonus short films on that disc were good. I just thought Knife in the Water was kind of filmed in a very flat, drab way. Like he hadn’t yet really found a style or a way of seeing things.
I agree about Knife in the Water, Justin. It did absolutely nothing for me.
But Repulsion is one of my favorite films ever. I’m so glad to hear that Criterion is gonna release it so I can finally see it in a decent print.
The DVD I have of ‘Repulsion’ is terrible.
This is great news for me and bad news for my wallet.
Could Cul de Sac be next? I’ve been waiting ages for a to scrap my VHS.
I’m happy about this I suppose. The version of Repulsion out now is seriously horrendous and it made it really difficult to sit through the movie. Not to mention it’s impossible to get caught up in what’s going on in the film because of the terrible transfer. Having never seen a Polanski film I did NOT like, I have high hopes for the CC version of this.
I’m really too distraught to continue. They won’t update the Eclipse coming soon and that Korda set looks so sad and lonely sitting there all by itself…and I don’t really think I can wait another month to find out what it is going to be. I’m dying a little inside every day now. Please give me the skinny on the Eclipse 17
I’m not a big fan of Repulsion. Give my The Tenant or Rosemary’s Baby any day.
Even though I’m not a big fan of the film overall, there’s a moment during that scene with the landlord where one brief moment, one little look, turns the entire scene on a dime. Really brilliant storytelling.
The Tenant would be a great bookend release to Repulsion as the theme of both movies is very similar. It would be great if Criterion could get the rights. Though laced with far more tongue-in-cheek humor than Repulsion, The Tenant is very unsettling and chilling with moments of absolute terror. Then there’s Polanski’s macabre ultra-violent version of MacBeth which is also and eye opener (Polanski’s primal scream after the murder of his wife). I could go on and on.
Yes! Finally! I seriously can’t wait to buy this and see it in a high quality transfer. The print I have of Repulsion has absolutely horrible sound and picture quality, like many of yours it appears.
When I first saw this, I was watching it in my darkened bedroom at night. To say it was a transcendental experience is an understatement. The film slowly envelopes you in its waking nightmare atmosphere. I can’t wait to pick this up when Criterion releases it.
Repulsion is what I feel when I see works by Polanski. The man PLEAD GUILTY to unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor. A girl of 13. Plus according to police records it sure sounded like rape. A monster like him should receive no support for any of his works. Talented or not in the film world, the man deserves nothing, I was disappointed in Criterion when I saw this on their list. Do none of you take into account his actions?
Please, let’s not turn the auteurs into IMDB for God’s sake.
By that statement, you’re also ignoring the fact that his victim has forgiven him and pleaded for all others to do the same, saying that she feels he paid for his crimes. Not to mention the possible illegal dealings going on in the backroom of his trial with the prosecutor and judge.
Also, the psychological damage caused by seeing your wife brutally murdered as part of the most publicized killing rampage in American history would put anyone into a dark and disturbing place, where you would do things you otherwise may not have.
He committed a crime, but in no way should his entire life/career be viewed in such a black and white manner, boscogn.

Noooooooooooooo. They’re running out of movies.
