Great documentary. I am a bit obsessive about Lowry, having read everything he published or left unfinished, several critical works and bios, seen this documentary, and more. He lived in a squatter’s shack just across the bay from where I now live. A wonderful writer whose great work Under the Volcano I can’t recommend enough. I didn’t care much for Huston’s treatment of the novel in his film version, as he seemed to miss all the nuances and undercurrents in the novel. For this one, you MUST read the book. Thanks for the heads up on the documentary, Grosmene. Our great NFB shines again – there is a treasure trove here for film buffs of all stripes.
A very great documentary. Lowry was a tragic figure in the literary world who could have given us so much more, but what he did leave us was Herculean in scope. Under the Volcano remains one of the masterworks of 20th century literature.
Malcolm Lowry is one of the most vital voices of the 20th century. His novels have meant a great deal to me.
