Wow. Can someone say “troll”?
What, who, me?
I’m going to the Jean Renoir section…
Saloloverboy just loves Salo, boy!
I’m a pasolini fan so i think salo is pretty important too… but it’s not a movie you would want to re-visit. if you want the much more enjoyable anti-thesis of salo, watch his Arabian Nights.
I had it in my top ten list, just because it is unequaled in sickness ,and it says something at the same time.
I have to ask, I am about to watch this film, and I’m really loathing it. Is it cheating if I stay on my computer during it? Just giving my full attention to rapes and torture, uhhh the thought. Or do I miss the point? Is it something I just have to suffer through? If I get no response I am just going to suffer.
Hang in there, Drew. It’s a well-made movie that just happens to depict certain offensive things, but it helps to think of it as being about the Nazi concentration camps.
Watch it. Focus. DO NOT AVERT THE EYES. Imagine you are Alex from A Clockwork Orange : )
Uh oh, I think we’ve lost him.
Well, I would like to see Salo, but it’s banned and illegal (apparently) in Australia. Is it TRULY unwatchable and depraved or is it all hyperbole?
If I eventually watch it, am I going to go HOLY JESUS SHIT!? Or will I go ‘meh. Is that all?’

(I’m sure we can find you a copy somehow, illegal cinema or not)
It’s a shame really that this movie gets so built up for the wrong reasons. It’s so much more than just a shock test or an endurance test. I would hate to think that if someone watches this movie and doesn’t feel what they think they should feel (something like when the Germans looked at the Ark of the Covenant in Raiders of the Lost Ark and their faces melted off, lol), that they would then shrug and go meh. Sorry Rossoneri fan, I’m not picking on you, I just think that question is the wrong way to approach it.
Well, Justin that’s absolutely true. The film does get built up for the wrong reasons, but you must admit there are certain scenes that are just plain disturbing (without giving anything away, the young woman being forced to eat… uhhh… “waste” is one of the hardest things I’ve ever witnessed). It’s shocking, and it’s supposed to be. It’s supposed to disturb, and disgust you. I, personally, found things like the President’s jokes, and dumb, constant smile, and just the implied depravity behind the actions much more disturbing, and difficult than any action themselves. But it is an extremely graphic film, and most people will react completely to that, it’s to be expected. I guess I should hold this in until May 1st, huh?
Hype it, but don’t give the game away : )
>>Is it cheating if I stay on my computer during it?<<
Yes.
The only excuse for being on your computer while watching a film is that you’re reviewing it and on deadline.
Or the film is DEUCE BIGELOW.
You may loathe SALO, you may even bail out partway … but it deserves your full attention.
So I didn’t return last night because my internet was down not because the film killed me. I watched the film and ended up having to give it my full attention because I had to have 2 remotes in my hand (one to pause and one to turn off) just in case my parents walked in.
I always say that if a film makes me feel anything then it is a great film. I struggle to call Salo that because it was so painful to watch but based on my usual way of film judging it was a great film. Col Dax, I agree that the content around the events was just as bad as the events. Once I figured out the one women’s stories were foreshadowing to upcoming events I would groan in misery as she told her tales. I doubt some of the scenes will ever not be in the back of my thoughts (dog scene, binocular scene) but I am still glad I watched it.
Also Harry Long I obviously agree. I never ever am on my computer during a film (unless I am being forced to watch crap with a friend), it is just with this one I was considering it.
Delta Force was better… and less violent!
SalòLoverBoy
If you haven’t seen Salò you haven’t seem cinema. A must see… Only that the BFI version is better… sorry Criterion.
