Please God, no!

No film should be remade. If the public cannot embrace the originals then why bother? It will automatically be sub par.

The Fly.
The Thing.
The Lower Depths.
The Killers.
The Maltese Falcon.
Farewell, My Lovely.
And on and on and on.

It would be easier to remake Gone with the Wind rather than Seven Samurai to a level satisfactory to critics.

If it looks like crap i won’t see it. Simple as that. I didn’t think they should try the Day the Earth Stood Still either so i didn’t see it. I hope that people who did/will see them will want to see the originals. and that is good side effect.

REMAKES OF SIGNIFICANT FILMS SHOULD BE AN INTERNATIONAL CRIME. WOULD THE VATICAN REMAKE THE CHAPEL JUST FOR A NEW LOOK?

Once again: The Killers. The Thing. The Lower Depths. The Maltese Falcon. All remakes of significant films, all worth being remade.

Remakes can be good if they take the story in a different direction. Although note for note remakes can be interesting too (Funny Games). So there’s no steadfast rules. If I had to instate a rule, I’d prefer if Hollywood would just stop making bad movies.

i agree that great films shouldn’t be remade for the most part but in addition to the ones Joshua mentioned I would add that Scorcese’s Cape Fear seems worthy to me. The way he took what was essentially a 2 character drama and made it a 4 character drama is impressive. Also brilliant is the way he changed the dynamic from one where Peck has to sink to Mitchum’s level to put him down to one where Nolte is already less than stalwart and DeNiro simply takes advantage of deep rooted issues the family already has.

I would want to see this film remade like I would like needles stuck in my eyes!

C’mon Daniel, spit it out. Are you for it or against it?

Daniel A

Sorry Harry, I’m against it.

I don’t feel there is a director, nor actors out there which can compete worth a cent.

While the understandable first reaction to the idea of a SEVEN SAMURAI remake by any self-respecting cinephile is likely to be cries of sacrilege, sometimes these new works turn out to be diamonds in their own right.

In this regard, the original remake of this film, THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN, is a brilliant western that ranks as a Hollywood classic.

Have to part ways with you there Michael. The filmmakers behind The Magnificent Seven just really never got what was so special about that story, and in my opinion, they half-assed it the whole way through. And I love westerns, and am generally good about separating my expectations of adaptations from the end result, but that movie. Bleck.

Has anyone seen the remake of Sanjuro? It’s a little ambiguous whether or not it actually got released.

The Mayor Of Hell

The only way to remake this is through a western. That is if an american wants to re do it. If a Japenese director wants to take a stab at this film I’d expect it to be the costliest production to date, take 5 years to finish, and cause said director to lose all his hair. Only then would it MAYBE compare to the behemoth that is Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai. Even then it would probably come no where close but at least then I’d know he tried.

I completely agree with Mayor of Hell

The problem with remakes is not that the great film was remade or reimaged; it is that the “new” audience they are trying to reach will never watch the original that inspired it.

My 15 year old daughter absolutely loves The Producers . . . but refuses to watch the original.

So we have all these people that are watching lesser remakes of masterpiece films and making judgments that shadow both films.

i hear you Eric. every time i hear that a great movie is being remade i instantly feel this fight inside me which on one side hopes that the ’ew version with pique interest in the original. Then there is the other side which knows that most likely not happen.

There’s nothing more boring than a bunch of sad sacks getting all indignant over their pure object of obsession being recreated by someone else. Get over it.

Magnificent Seven (J. Sturge 1960) is a western remake of Seven Samurai, like A Fistful of Dollars is the remake of Yojimbo (A. Kurosawa 1961), and each are good. In this way, this is not a question about a remake or an original story, it’s more about the ability to make own a story, even if it is not yours, and do something with that.

I loved the Mag 7 but for a very good reason not to try a remake see Last Man Standing also an attempt at it.

I think Michael Bay should direct with Shia Labeouf in the lead. Eh?

Kriz Kubrick

While the powers that be are at it they should just remake Citizen Kane. It seems, nothing is sacred anymore.

A Michael Bay remake of It’s A Wonderful Life. I can see that hapening sadly.
