GARAGE is a grass roots, homegrown filmmakers collective, born of a heated debate here at The Auteurs. We exist to explore the dimensions of the art form we love, to see where it can become dangerous and unexpected, thrive and evolve. We work by the principles of open collaboration and pure experiment. Our ambition is to build a global filmmaking community.

As a word, GARAGE has long been associated in various subcultures to mean the down and dirty, the underground, the lo-fi and the raw. Taking this word as a departure point, we seek to re-frame, examine and develop that meaning so it relates to film.

As we understand it, advances in technology have liberated film from its distributional prison, placing it in the hands of new generation. This is no longer a revolution, but a fact.

Our response is to push forward. To this end, we conceive of GARAGE as both a school and a laboratory. We are most concerned with praxis, method and the development of a new cinematic language.

Beyond this, we have no aesthetic dogma, no arthouse code to live up to. We work together to conduct our own experiments, to create our own challenges, to strengthen our roots and our craft.

This is not a manifesto. This is a call for manifestos, in the form of the moving image.   <<<
