Synopsis

From the creative team behind the Oscar-winning Broadway adaptation of Chicago comes a lavish feature take on the Tony award-winning musical inspired by Federico Fellini’s whimsical classic 8 1/2. Directed by Rob Marshall, Nine details the effort made by world-class filmmaker Guido Contini (Daniel Day-Lewis) in realizing his latest cinematic vision while simultaneously balancing his relationships with the many passionate and influential women in his life, including his mistress, Carla (Penélope Cruz), and wife, Luisa (Marion Cotillard). Original lyricist and composer Maury Yeston serves as co-executive producer for the filmed version of his own 1982 Broadway hit. Kate Hudson, Nicole Kidman, Sophia Loren, Fergie, and Judi Dench co-star in the Weinstein Co. production.

It was alright. Some good numbers and some nice cinematography. Plus I liked the performances. So it's really a mixed bag.

not the greatest, but still managed to entertain, specially the scenes with Daniel Day-Lewis, Marion Cotillard and Penelope Cruz. I thought the "Be Italian" scene was also interesting, but kate hudson and nicole kidman could be deleted from the movie most of the time...

Pathetic screenplay (rest in peace Mr. Minghella), abandoned cast, boring musical numbers, washed up cinematography are just a few things to hate about this flop. Poor Fellini.

Naturally this movie is not on par with the masterful allegorical Fellini's "8 1/2". For this genre, the musical numbers seemed at times a little lacking with flash and glitter pizzaz that made Marshall's "Chicago" an audience and critical darling.

Nine falls short

By Michael Offerosky on January 14, 2010

Nine wasn’t bad but it wasn’t great either and it definitely pales in comparison to Fellini’s 8 1/2 heavy on melodrama and not nearly as whimsical or magical as it could have been. Only two memorable…  read review

Guido goes to work on ninth film, instead of wasting time dancing

By Byron Brubaker on January 5, 2010

As an aspiring film buff I feel as if I am expected to appreciate Fellini’s original 8 1/2 for its Italian style and dense artistic philosophy. And I feel as if I should look down on this as many critics…  read review

Another Shitty Rob Marshall Flick

By Roscoe on January 3, 2010

Ever the glutton for punishment, I saw Rob Marshall’s film version of the musical NINE, itself a musical version of Fellini’s 8 1/2. Full disclosure, not a surprise to anyone: I think Rob Marshall…  read review

Imagination is God’s garden … Nine

By Jared Mobarak on December 27, 2009

Being the film version of a Broadway musical based on the Fellini film 8 1/2, it interested me to find out what the title meant. The Italian director’s odd half integer was in regards to the fact that…  read review
