SCR Woody Allen

DP Carlo Di Palma

CAST Woody Allen, Richard Benjamin, Kirstie Alley

Synopsis

Harry Block is a well-regarded novelist whose tendency to thinly-veil his own experiences in his work, as well as his un-apologetic attitude and his proclivity for pills and whores, has left him with three ex-wives that hate him. As he is about to be honored for his writing by the college that expelled him, he faces writer’s block and the impending marriage of his latest flame to a writer friend. As scenes from his stories and novels pass and interact with him, Harry faces the people whose lives he has affected – wives, lovers, his son, his sister. —IMDb

Woody Allen

Actor, director, screenwriter, and playwright Woody Allen redefined film comedy during the 1970s, bringing a new measure of sophistication and personal complexity to the form. Born Allen Stewart Konigsberg in Brooklyn, NY, on December 1, 1935, he adopted his stage name at the age of 17, and in 1953 enrolled in NYU’s film program, and soon dropping out of school to begin writing for comedian David Alber. Two years later, Allen graduated to writing for television; during his five-year in television, his efforts won him an Emmy nomination. He eventually decided to try his hand as a stand-up performer. After slowly gaining a reputation on the New York-club circuit, he became a frequent talk show guest and in 1964 issued his self-titled debut comedy LP. With 1966’s What’s Up, Tiger Lily?, a puckish re-tooling of a Japanese spy thriller complete with his own story line and dubbed English dialogue, he made his directorial debut. In 1969 Allen directed two short films for a CBS television special… read more

This movie's eccentric characters, narrative originality and surreal-like scenes creates an unforgettable comedy that stays true to the "Woody Allen" we all know. Although its received mixed reviews (mainly because people say its difficult to relate to Woody Allen's rather unpleasant character) , I believe its comedic innovations and sharp dialogue compensate.

This is easily the best movie Woody Allen has done since he and Mia Farrow parted ways and his career started getting spotty. It has the wild comic invention of his early work and the sardonic wit he's known for is razor sharp here. Taking Ingmar Bergman's WILD STRAWBERRIES and rebuilding the concept as a comedy, this might be the last truly great film Woody Allen will make.

I just remember Julia Louise Dreyfuss getting fucked in the ass. It's been a long time since I've seen this movie, I've been watching Woody films since I was 10 and I am pretty sure I was like 11 when I seen this...where were my parents?

poorly balanced pedantry and disjointedness of this Woody Allen work are pretty annoying; but some funny bits can compensate that.

Make no mistake… This was the final film that Woody Allen ever made. Ever since, ‘Woody Allen’ has been doing all the directing, and ‘Woody Allen’ is unfortunately a desperate, trite, self-parodic…  read review
