Synopsis

For most of us, a day at the office is never accompanied by media interviews and roaring crowds. For Los Angeles Lakers superstar Kobe Bryant, though, this is just a routine part of his job. In the spring of 2008, with the Lakers set to face off against the San Antonio Spurs in a late-season game with major playoff implications, legendary filmmaker and conspicuous sports fan Spike Lee took the opportunity to show what it’s like for a top athlete like Kobe to go to work. With unprecedented access, Lee follows him from his arrival at the Staples Center through team meetings and pregame warm-ups, during the game itself, and at the end of his day as he, his wife, and his kids get in the car to drive home. —Aaron Dobbs

As a writer, director, actor, producer, author, and entrepreneur, Spike Lee has revolutionized the role of black talent in Hollywood, tearing away decades of stereotypes and marginalized portrayals to establish a new arena for Afro-American voices to be heard. His movies, a series of outspoken and provocative socio-political critiques informed by an unwavering commitment toward challenging cultural assumptions not only about race but also class and gender identity, both solidified his own standing as one of contemporary cinema’s most influential figures and furthered the careers of actors including Denzel Washington, Wesley Snipes, Samuel L. Jackson, Angela Bassett, and Laurence Fishburne. Born Shelton Jackson Lee in Atlanta, GA, on March 20, 1957, he was raised in the Fort Greene section of Brooklyn. After attending Atlanta’s prestigious Morehouse College, returned to New York to make his first movie, 1977’s Last Hustle in Brooklyn, a portrait of the area’s Black and Puerto Rican communities… read more

This is a contrived documentary. Kobe Bryant knows the cameras are on him and that every word he speaks is being heard. Essentially what you are watching is a basketball game with Kobe on his best behavior.

I'm sorry, guys, but I can't be impartial about this one. As a basketball fan, I've been following Kobe Bryant's performances since the first time I saw him playing, so don't expect less than four stars for Spike Lee's film.
