Synopsis

Ten years after the liberation of the Nazi concentration camps, filmmaker Alain Resnais documented the abandoned grounds of Auschwitz. One of the first cinematic reflections on the horrors of the Holocaust, Nuit et Brouillard contrasts the stillness of the abandoned camps’ quiet, empty buildings with haunting wartime footage. With Nuit et Brouillard, Resnais investigates the cyclical nature of man’s violence toward man and presents the unsettling suggestion that such horrors could come again. —The Criterion Collection

Alain Resnais

While a seminal figure of the French New Wave, Alain Resnais was not, like so many of his contemporaries, an alumnus of the film journal Cahiers du Cinema. In fact, he existed well outside of the sphere of filmmakers like Jean-Luc Godard, Francois Truffaut, and Jacques Rivette, with a dedication to formalism, modernist concerns, and social and political issues not found in the work of his fellow innovators. Conceptually, I understand how this took place, but my heart will never be able to grasp such inhumanity

Anyone who thinks they understood the horrors of the camps in WWII, best take a look at this 30 minute masterpiece.

It is certainly a masterpiece, but not one I found easy to watch. But isn't that the point? If the audience doesn't feel uncomfortable watching a film on something like the holocaust, then the director probably isn't doing their job right.
