Great movie with terrific acting: despite all the good performances, I'd say Edward G. Robinson and his "little man" shine the whole way through.
a perfect noir: casting, script, cinematography... fate as one of the main themes, the sex appeal of (mortal) evil, lies, murder, ambition: greed + lust, out of some kind of pride. just love the use of schubert's unfinished symphony wich makes me love more than ever godard's histoire(s) du cinéma
Well paced with the perfect cast of actors. And who better to write than Billy Wilder and Raymond Chandler. A great achievement in film noir cinema. Truly memorable.
A great film. Tight story, good acting, great directing, and great cinematography. An American classic.
"Love and murder at first sight" Fred MacMurray is sunk by his crave for money and for the enticing Barbara Stanwyck. Amoral, snappy and tense excercise of suspense; and probably Miss Stanwyck's finest hour. Rounded noir perfection.
The script struck me as rock solid, maybe perfect. The acting is wonderful too. Actually, the movie couldn't really be better.
I love Cain, but this one was my least favourite adaptation. I like the innuendos and double entendres in Mildred Pierce and the seductiveness in The Postman Always Rings Twice, but dislike Barbara Stanwyck and the dialogue of this one, despite the fact that it was meant to be excessively stylized--erhem, (understandably) cheesy to some.
The most boring noir I've ever seen, seriously, especially when seen after Kasdan's Body Heat. Black and White may be a filmmaker's best bud but so is sweaty, shmexy, full colour William Hurt. Sorry guys.
