Woody Allen

Actor, director, screenwriter, and playwright Woody Allen redefined film comedy during the 1970s, bringing a new measure of sophistication and personal complexity to the form. Born Allen Stewart Konigsberg in Brooklyn, NY, on December 1, 1935, he adopted his stage name at the age of 17, and in 1953 enrolled in NYU’s film program, and soon dropping out of school to begin writing for comedian David Alber. Two years later, Allen graduated to writing for television; during his five-year in television, his efforts won him an Emmy nomination. He eventually decided to try his hand as a stand-up performer. After slowly gaining a reputation on the New York-club circuit, he became a frequent talk show guest and in 1964 issued his self-titled debut comedy LP. I really love Scarlett Johansson, and she was adorable in this movie, so that's good. But it feels like Woody Allen's later works have little substance to them. The movie was charming and had a good sense of humor, but it doesn't even begin to compare to Allen's finer Films.

An average, predictable story spiced up with the occasional original feature (I loved the scenes that played on the Reaper's boat to eternity), the typical Woody Allen dialogues/monologues and Hugh Jackman's body made for a fluffy, entertaining movie after all. Nothing that knocked me off of my feet, nothing that wasted my time either.

Allen does another charming murder mystery, this time far away from his beloved New York. Scarlett Johansson is not much of an actress, but she is always good on the eyes, and she has a very good chemistry with the old Woody. They're also very well supported by Ian McShane and Hugh Jackman. A satisfactory comedy with sharp, witty dialogue and enjoyable Bergmanian and Hitchcockian touches.
