Synopsis

Fernando Meirelles’ City of God is a sweeping tale of how crime affects the poor population of Rio de Janeiro. Though the narrative skips around in time, the main focus is on Cabeleira who formed a gang called the Tender Trio. He and his best friend, Bené (Phelipe Haagensen), become crime lords over the course of a decade. When Bené is killed before he can retire, Lil’ Zé attempts to take out his arch enemy, Sandro Cenoura (Matheus Nachtergaele). But Sandro and a young gangster named Mane form an alliance and begin a gang war with Lil’ Zé. Amateur photographer Buscape (Alexandre Rodrigues) takes pictures of the brutal crime war, making their story famous. City of God was screened at the 2002 Cannes Film Festival.

Beautiful piece of history inside the Cidade de Deus. A film made with heart. Completely true and unpretentious. Fantastic editing serves as a metaphor for the many souvenirs of the protagonist (whom is breaking the fourth wall and adressing directly to the viewer. Love, violence, friendship, drugs, drugs, and drugs again. A HUMAN gangster film. Beautiful testament of foreign cinema.

Shocking. True. It makes you think, it makes you cherish your life even more, it makes you disgusted by the world it makes you think again. It touches you deeply, at least it did me. Amazing camerawork, actors, storytelling, flow of the film. Flawless.

This is an incredible film. Not that I would know, but it felt so real and true to Drug Businesses. Really great actors too. It pushed the limits and really got me enthralled in the lives of the characters.

Few films that come out nowadays go the distance to include every major aspect of a great film. Not going to go into much detail regarding characters/plot. Everyone else will cover that in their reviews…  read review
