Synopsis

The resolutely single Don Johnston has just been dumped by his latest lover, Sherry. Don resigns himself to being alone yet again and left to his own devices. Instead, he is compelled to reflect on his past when he receives by mail a mysterious pink letter. It is from an anonymous former lover and informs him that he has a 19-year-old son who may now be looking for his father. Don is urged to investigate this “mystery” by his closest friend and neighbor, Winston, an amateur sleuth and family man. Hesitant to travel at all, Don nonetheless embarks on a cross-country trek in search of clues from four former flames. Unannounced visits to each of these unique women hold new surprises for Don as he haphazardly confronts both his past and, consequently, his present.

Jim Jarmusch’s new bitter-sweet tale.

Jim Jarmusch

With his trademark shock of white hair and ultra-cool rock star persona, Jim Jarmusch is the archetypal auteur of American independent film. Born on January 22, 1953, in Akron, OH, Jarmusch was the son of a former film critic for the Akron Beacon Journal. In University, he went to Paris as an exchange student and spend most of his time at the Parisian Cinemas. Upon his return to New York, Jarmusch transferred to Columbia University, where, though he eventually received a degree in English literature. With no film experience, he was accepted into New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts and soon found himself a teaching assistant to legendary maverick filmmaker Nicholas Ray. Ray helped him get funding for his thesis project, Permanent Vacation (1980). Though the film was later released to critical acclaim, his professors were underwhelmed by his final project and Jarmusch never got a degree from N.Y.U.

Jarmusch’s break came with his next film; the 30-minute short eventually… read more

I understand why some people would find this slow or without plot. It doesn't have a conventional plot. Jarmusch is one of the director's I most admire, so simple yet emotional, beautiful and truthful. It's a great simple movie. The ending is amazing in it's openness and intelligent. Postmodern too. And the use of the music is to be studied.

I enjoyed Murray in this very much, everything blended together nicely, sure it's a bit slow, but life isn't a face-paced adventure. you have to see this through his eyes, and through his emotions

Broken Flowers is a modern day look at a modern day Man who reaches a mid-life crisis. The mid-life crisis is where Jarmusch comes in to create a work of art. Granted, Broken Flowers isn’t the best…  read review
