Synopsis

Two London brothers are hard-up for cash, and both have girls to look out for, too. Buying a second-hand sailboat named Cassandra’s Dream is mainly a way to dream about becoming rich. Terry didn’t really overcome his drinking and gambling problem, while Ian has a hard time saving money for his planned investment in a Californian estate project. When rich Uncle Howard comes to town and agrees to help them out, he admits his finances are under investigation, and he asks them to do him a favor and “take care of” an old business partner to keep his trouble under wraps – he says that they’re family, and since he always takes care of them, the least they could do is help him out this once, as they’re the only ones he can trust. The two brothers have to decide whether they shall cross the line.

Woody Allen

Actor, director, screenwriter, and playwright Woody Allen redefined film comedy during the 1970s, bringing a new measure of sophistication and personal complexity to the form. Born Allen Stewart Konigsberg in Brooklyn, NY, on December 1, 1935, he adopted his stage name at the age of 17, and in 1953 enrolled in NYU’s film program, and soon dropping out of school to begin writing for comedian David Alber. Two years later, Allen graduated to writing for television; during his five-year in television, his efforts won him an Emmy nomination. He eventually decided to try his hand as a stand-up performer. After slowly gaining a reputation on the New York-club circuit, he became a frequent talk show guest and in 1964 issued his self-titled debut comedy LP. With 1966’s What’s Up, Tiger Lily?, a puckish re-tooling of a Japanese spy thriller complete with his own story line and dubbed English dialogue, he made his directorial debut. In 1969 Allen directed two short films for a CBS television special… read more

How does Allen manage to crank out so many films? It's ridiculous. I hadn't even heard of this one when it was in theatres. Despite strong performances and a decent plot, the film fails to launch past the "good-but-not-great" status that applies to so many of Allen's films.

An interesting story that gets diluted by lazy direction. In typical fashion Tom Wilkinson rises above the material and gives a top notch performance.

I think compared to Allen's other work, this really didn't measure up too well. The Characters weren't as strong as they usually are. The Plot was lacking a lot of substance. I think he could have taken the story somewhere, but like I said- this just didn't cut it.

An outstanding cast and exceptional writing as always from Allen.

I went into the Toronto Film Fest screening of Woody Allen’s latest movie Cassandra’s Dream completely void of knowing anything about it. With no other preconception besides the fact that I really…  read review
