Synopsis

Ang Lee

Born in 1954 in Taipei, he graduated from the National Taiwan College of Arts in 1975 and then went to the United States, where he studied theater directing at the University of Illinois and film production at New York University. After winning awards in 1985 for his student work (while at N.Y.U., he also worked on Spike Lee’s acclaimed student film, Joe’s Bed-Stuy Barbershop: We Cut Heads), Lee spent the next six years working on screenplays, eventually making his directorial debut in 1992 with Pushing Hands. A comedy about the generational and cultural gaps in a Taiwanese family in New York, it won awards in Lee’s native country. His next film, The Wedding Banquet (1993), further explored cultural and generational differences through a gay New Yorker who stages a marriage of convenience to please his visiting Taiwanese parents. a movie that stays in your heart. One thing is totally annoying though: why the cast, director, critics are always apologetic saying: "THIS IS NOT ONLY A GAY MOVIE, BUT CAN BE UNIVERSAL"!!!! FIRST: what is wrong in being ONLY a gay movie SECOND: have you ever heard people saying about, for instance, IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE things like "THIS IS NOT ONLY A STRAIGHT MOVIE, IT COULD RELATE ALSO TO GAYS"

Such a profoundly moving film. The love and pain resonating from the film are so powerful. Heath Ledger's performance here is the greatest of his career, surpassing his work in The Dark Knight. Gyllenhaal, Williams, and Hathaway also contribute memorable work, Ang Lee's direction is great, the script is flawless, and the score is incredibly haunting and poignant.

i didn't find this movie to be particularly inspired, it just seemed like it was banking on the fact that it was showing risque gay love scenes and that should be enough for it to be a 'good' movie. there's a lot of nice photography in this movie, but the plot is weak and the overall aim really isn't very subtle or really all that poignant.

robbed of that oscar, i tell you, robbed. CRASH, fucking CRASH won that year? that movie has less to do with good cinema than rush limbaugh has to do with soft open minded cuddly puppies. Best movie of 2006, Definitely.

A Lost Epic

As debate breeds fire among the acolytes of clashing causes, art tends to meddle in, not looking for a solution but raising questions, whether it be in political matters like Steven Spielberg’s Munich…  read review

People should open their minds, and think about this film more universal. It’s about people who couldn’t love who they want to love. The society doesn’t let them to live their lives.
It’s a shame…  read review

This is a good movie. The music is AMAZING and highly recommend it, whether you want to see the movie or not.

In my opinion, I think “Memoirs of a Geisha” should’ve walked away with Best Original…  read review

Brokeback Mountain is a great film overshadowed by the controversy. This film is more about the complexity of relationships rather than a celebration of homosexuality…  read review
